Allow vehicle registration with passports in South Carolina
The Issue
I am writing this petition because I deeply believe that all individuals, regardless of their immigration status, should have the opportunity to live and work freely without unnecessary restrictions. Alone in handling everyday tasks, purchasing vehicles, owning homes, and fulfilling the obligations that come alongside, such as paying property taxes, is fundamental. However, in South Carolina, and more specifically in Horry County, a significant hurdle stands in the way: the inability to register vehicles using a passport.
In South Carolina, the inability to use a passport for vehicle registration has profound consequences, not just for the individuals involved but for the state and county governments as well. The Hispanic community, many of whom may not have legal binding documents, contribute significantly to our local economy. They pay taxes like every other resident, contributing to the funding of vital services and infrastructure. Yet, they are barred from registering their vehicles, which is an essential task for everyday living. This practice not only impedes their daily lives but also results in a missed economic opportunity for the state and county.
The numbers speak for themselves. It's estimated that by not allowing vehicle registration with a passport, Horry County and the state of South Carolina risk losing millions of dollars annually. This loss comes from unpaid registration fees and taxes that could otherwise be reinvested into our communities. Additionally, unregistered vehicles can lead to increased insurance premiums for everyone and pose a greater risk to road safety, affecting every driver in South Carolina.
Allowing vehicle registration with passports provides a simple yet effective solution. It ensures that everyone who contributes to our economy also has the means to do so safely and legally. This policy change respects the contributions and dignity of all South Carolinians, fosters inclusivity, and strengthens our economic foothold.
Join me in urging the South Carolina and Horry County legislators to amend their policies and permit vehicle registration with passports. Let's encourage our lawmakers to recognize the value and contributions of all community members, regardless of their immigration status. Together we can make a change that is equitable, economically beneficial, and justly serves all residents of our wonderful state.
Please sign this petition to show your support for this crucial and overdue policy change, and together, let's build a more inclusive and prosperous South Carolina.
