The Issue

My personal journey sparked this petition. As a city dweller with ever-increasing costs of living and food insecurity issues, having the ability to raise poultry would provide a sustainable source of nutrition and food for me and other urban residents. Besides, the rearing of poultry, excluding roosters, can bring about a positive change in our lives, both economically and health-wise.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, poultry is a critical provider of food security and nutrition, directly supplying eggs and meat which are high in good quality protein and other essential nutrients (FAO, 2014). Despite this critical role, however, many city ordinances forbid the raising of poultry within city limits. This creates unnecessary barriers for urban residents in sourcing their own food and improving their nutritional intake via a sustainable method.

Zoonotic diseases are often cited as a reason for such ordinances. Nevertheless, the likelihood of disease transmission from hens to humans is very low, particularly when proper precautionary measures are taken (CDC, 2017). Noise is another cited reason. By excluding roosters, this issue can be effectively resolved.

So, I implore the city council to reconsider these outdated ordinances and permit urban residents to keep poultry, excluding roosters, within city limits. Join us in our commitment to sustainability and better nutrition in our city. Please sign this petition to support urban poultry farming.
