The Issue

We understand that the university is facing significant financial strain, and we appreciate the difficult decisions leadership must make during this time. However, the proposed change to our current insurance provider is deeply concerning to many of us within the university. We would like the option to keep our existing Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) coverage. It has been critical not only in ensuring we receive quality healthcare but also in retaining a quality workforce.

The move to United Health Care (UHC) is a move to dismantle this reliable healthcare safety net and could impose significant hardships on our families and ourselves. Northwestern knows that continuity of care is essential for building trust, improving health outcomes, and ensuring that patients receive consistent, coordinated treatment over time. It helps prevent medical errors, reduces unnecessary costs, and is especially vital for managing chronic or complex conditions. Transitioning to a new insurance provider would not only threaten this continuity but also potentially lead to higher out-of-pocket costs and reduced access to trusted medical professionals.

Maintaining access to BCBS—even at a higher premium—affords those who value its benefits the choice to prioritize their healthcare in alignment with their personal circumstances.

We call on the decision-makers at our organization to reconsider and allow for flexibility in selecting insurance providers. Granting an option to choose between BCBS or UHC is not only fair and considerate, but shows a commitment to supporting a healthy, motivated, and sustained workforce.

Please sign this petition to advocate for our right to choose our health insurance and secure the well-being of our community.
