current policy in secondary schools in Ireland require transgender students to gain parental permission before teachers can use their preferred pronouns and/or name this policy is ignorant to the fact that many trans and nonbinary youth have parents that don't accept them. as a trans teenager I feel that this policy ignores the fact that not all parents are accepting of their kids.  one of the leading causes of transgender teen depression self harm and suicide is not being accepted at school or at home.  28% of lgbtqia+ youth report being out of a home. every year thousands of trans and non binary kids are kicked out of their homes. one of the causes for this is being forcefully outed by their teachers in school. this policy may encourage trans kids to come out to their parents even when they don't feel safe doing so, in some cases this may result in the child or teenager being kicked out of their home being abused or treated differently. I believe that allowing transgender children and teenagers to socially transition without parental consent may lead to a lower risk of them being kicked out of home, self harming or attempting suicide.
