Allow Three Young Boys 2 who are T1D to Continue Playing for Their Lacrosse Team
The Issue
My three grandsons ages 6, 9 and 11 have been passionately playing lacrosse for the Oro Valley team in Tucson, AZ, USA. For 16 weeks this season, they have shown dedication and commitment to their team and coaches. However, due to disagreements among adults and the leagues unrelated to the boys' performance or behavior on the field, they are now being denied the opportunity to continue playing for their current team for the remainder of the season. Last season was already a struggle due to mental health and wellness from their previous team’s coach. They were able to finally find peace playing for their new team this season and now have it all taken away. The league continues to tell us the only way we can play lacrosse in Tucson is if we return to our previous team and they will not grant the reasonable accommodation that prioritizes the boy's mental and physical health.
Lacrosse is more than just a game for these boys; it's a platform where they learn teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship; and the fact that 2 of them have Type 1 Diabetes and will not let that slow them down or keep them from playing lacrosse. It's disheartening that adult disagreements are impacting their ability to participate in an activity that brings them joy and personal growth.
According to Youth Sports Statistics from The Aspen Institute Project Play (2019), participation in organized sports can lead positive youth development including improved academic achievement, mental health benefits and fostering of social skills. Denying these children access due their love of lacrosse is not only unfair but also detrimental.
We urge those involved in this decision-making process to reconsider their stance. Let's prioritize our children's interests over adult disagreements. Please sign this petition if you believe these three young boys should be allowed back onto their beloved Oro Valley lacrosse team.
