The Issue

For many of us parents/coaches, capturing our children's precious moments on the field is a cherished experience. However, recent policies at Russell Foster mini soccer games have put a stop to this. Admittedly, this policy aims to protect the privacy of all children involved, and it is crucial to approach this issue with sensitivity and respect. Yet, when both teams agree to photography or videography, such moments should not be stifled. This request is not just about snapping pictures; it's about preserving memories, celebrating our children's achievements, feeling a part of their growth, promoting the sport and help towards the development of our children.

As a parent/coach actively involved in the Russell Foster league, I have seen first-hand the joy and pride that comes from capturing these unique moments. Whether it's their first goal or a triumphant save, these moments are fleeting and deserve to be remembered. Many of my fellow parents/coaches feel the same way, often reminiscing together over past games and sharing those joyful, triumphant images of our kids. The camera technology that is available today needs to be embraced, not feared.

The current blanket ban disregards the possibility for mutual agreements between teams. It also goes against the football association guidance, note this extract from their photographing and filming children guidance notes no 8.3 “the taking of appropriate photographs and/or filming of children is supported by The FA”.
By granting coaches the ability to photograph or film games – with the consent of both teams – we can strike a balance that honours both privacy concerns and the rights of parents to record their children's achievements.

I propose that Russell Foster introduces a policy/system whereby team coaches or organisers can coordinate consent prior to games. Implementing clearly defined guidelines and ensuring all parties are aware of them will protect interests across the board. If teams have been flagged for misuse of this subject Russell Foster needs to deal with these teams individually instead of punishing every team in mini soccer.  Education on safeguarding is the solution here not reactive measures with no logical thought process.

Furthermore, clear channels of communication between parents, coaches, and the league are needed. If issues arise, they should be addressed swiftly and responsibly to maintain a safe and respectful environment for all involved. Emails to raise concerns on this situation are constantly being ignored.

We understand the importance of safeguarding our children's welfare. However, allowing mutually agreed upon photography can coexist with protective measures if handled appropriately. Therefore, I am urging the Russell Foster league to reconsider the current policy and adopt a more flexible approach that lets parents celebrate these moments in their children's lives.

Please sign this petition to support a balanced and reasonable change to the photography policies at Russell Foster mini soccer games, so coaches can continue to celebrate and share in their children's sporting success.
