Allow Sylvania Bulldogs U8's to compete in Sydney Rugby Union
The issue
My heart aches as I write this. Our beloved Sylvania Bulldogs Under 8's Rugby Union team is under threat. This group of enthusiastic young players, girls and boys, filled with potential and passion, are being told they cannot compete in the Sydney Rugby Union competition.
Why? Because of alleged complaints, the team has been told to disband. Let's consider the issues presented:
1. Allegedly, one of our girls, despite being the correct age, is deemed "too big" to play. Drawing such a line based on physical attributes undermines the spirit of inclusion and fairness.
2. The team is criticized for having "too many" kids playing up in age groups. However, it's common practice for younger players to join older teams to foster growth and development, provide there is parent consent.
3. With 8 players in total and only needing 7 on the field, the claim of the team being "unviable" is unreasonable. Teams often manage with slight player surpluses—this should not be a disqualifier. And in any event, the spirit of rugby has often seen teams share players if down on players for whatever reason.
4. Lastly, one of our team members, a 5-year-old (who is quite tall at 118cms), is highlighted as an issue. Inclusivity should allow young talents to experience the game, setting the foundation for their passion, especially if there is parent consent.
No evidence or reliance has been provided on any law, policy, or guidelines to justify these decisions. Our young players deserve the chance to learn, grow, and compete in a structured and supportive environment.
Furthermore, the other local teams in the age group can only play against themselves every week!
Rugby is more than just a game; it teaches teamwork, discipline, respect, and resilience. Denying these young athletes the chance to play could discourage their burgeoning love for the sport.
We call upon the decision-makers of the Sydney Rugby Union to reconsider this stance. Allow our children the opportunity to play, compete, and learn on the field, side by side with their peers.
Please sign this petition to stand with the Sylvania Bulldogs U8's and safeguard the future of our young rugby enthusiasts.
