The Issue

We respectfully submit this petition to request a reconsideration of the upcoming ban on carrying mobile phones within the college campus.

For many of us, especially those traveling long distances across Bengaluru’s busy routes, a mobile phone is not a luxury — it is a basic tool for safety, navigation, communication, and secure transactions. Students frequently depend on real-time information regarding BMTC buses, metro timings, and traffic updates, and the inability to access our phones leaves us unable to inform our families about schedule changes or delays. Additionally, most students rely on UPI payments for daily expenses, and forcing them to carry cash instead increases risks of loss and theft, especially during travel.

In the present era, where technology supports and safeguards daily life, the complete prohibition of mobile phones unintentionally creates significant risks:

  • Students cannot contact family or guardians during emergencies.
  • Parents have no way to reach their children during travel-related issues.
  • Teachers often send urgent updates, schedule changes, or class instructions during college hours, but students cannot receive them without phone access.
  • Students are unable to make safe, trackable UPI payments for food, materials, and travel, pushing them toward cash-based transactions that are less secure.

While we understand the concern that phones may cause distractions, completely disallowing students from even carrying their phones does not solve the problem. Instead, it prevents students from using essential tools needed for safe travel, communication, and responsible transactions. Many colleges follow a balanced system where phones are allowed on campus but not used during class unless necessary.

By signing this petition, we demand a policy that matches the real needs of students today. Carrying a phone is not optional — it’s essential for safety, travel, and basic functioning.

We call on the administration to act immediately and update this outdated rule in the clear interest of student welfare.
