Allow students at GBDSS to run their Student Council
The Issue
I am writing to express a deep concern that affects the future leadership skills and personal growth opportunities for students at Georgian Bay District Secondary School (GBDSS) in Midland, Ontario. Recently, a dear friend of mine was denied the right to run for Student Council Leader, a role she was genuinely excited about and felt would define her high school experience. This decision was not based on her capabilities, enthusiasm, or potential to make a difference, but because the administration has taken control over what is traditionally a student-run organization.
In years past, the Student Council was a platform for students to voice their ideas, learn leadership skills, and contribute to their community. Student councils not only organize school events but also foster a sense of responsibility and teamwork. According to the National Association of Student Councils, students who actively participate in running their councils have improved communication skills, increased confidence, and a greater sense of personal responsibility. Such skills and experiences are invaluable as we transition into adulthood and aim for success post-high school.
However, at GBDSS, administrative staff now make critical decisions, undermining the primary intent of having a Student Council: student empowerment. Decisions affecting us are made without our input, and this top-down approach stifles creativity, initiative, and the development of essential life skills. It is important to note that the teachers are not at fault but in fact are trying to still help student growth even though they are being restricted by higher authority.
Empowering students to lead provides them with a safe environment to make decisions, learn from their mistakes, and celebrate their achievements. This autonomy is crucial for building a well-rounded education experience. In light of this, I ask that the administration at GBDSS return the power to the students, allowing them the chance to truly run their Student Council.
We propose the following actions to ensure that the Student Council is once again a platform for student leadership:
1. Allow students to nominate, vote, and elect their own council representatives.
2. Provide opportunities for students to organize and lead school events, with advisory support from faculty as needed.
3. Establish a student-led committee to work in collaboration with teachers to ensure a balanced and inclusive approach to student governance.
Please join me in asking Georgian Bay District Secondary School to make student leadership a priority. By signing this petition, you are supporting a movement that seeks to foster a more engaging and empowering educational environment for all students. Let’s give the power of leadership back to those who deserve it – the students. Thank you for your support.
