Allow Student Debt Repayment through Credit Card Transactions
The Issue
As a weighted community of student debt holders, we are experiencing first-hand the stringent and unfriendly constraints of our current debt repayment system. We discovered that the modality of payment on our student loans is unfairly inflexible – credit card payments are not permitted. This rule prevents us from utilizing the benefits of zero APR credit card offers, which provide us periods of 12-21 months without accruing any interest.
Personally, I experienced this after attempting to pay off smaller balances on my loans with a new credit card I had opened. It offered 15 months of zero-percent interest, a genuine opportunity for me to manage my debt more feasibly while also improving my credit standing. Unfortunately, I was denied and was told payments could only come from a checking or savings account.
This isn't just about me, it's about all of us. These restrictive payment limitations exacerbate our financial burdens, hampers our credit growth, and deprives us of the ability to take control of our student debts. And let's be clear: the student debt crisis in America is a significant problem. As per the Federal Reserve, outstanding student loan debt reached $1.7 trillion at the end of 2020, a clear and alarming indication of the severity of this issue.
We must take a stand against this. Our goal with this petition is to appeal to all relevant financial institutions and student loan companies, urging them to allow student debt holders to make repayments using credit cards, and thus enabling them to take advantage of zero APR offers. We believe in a more flexible, fair, and empowering loan repayment model that recognizes the borrower's autonomy and financial creativity.
Sign this petition today to help ensure all student debt holders can manage their loans with more financial freedom and less bureaucracy. Your signature could contribute to significant, positive reform. Support the financial freedom of millions of fellow Americans who are working hard to erase their student debts. They want loans paid back? Shouldn't we get to decide how?
