Allow student athletes free entry to other school games
The Issue
On October 7 after our middle school football boys had a hot successful practice, I noticed a disheartening situation. After their hard day of practice, these passionate young athletes wanted to support their peers and watch the middle school volleyball game, only to be turned away unless they paid for entry. As students who already contribute so much to the success of our school's sports programs, it seems only fair they should enjoy the camaraderie and school spirit that comes from attending other sporting events without additional expense.
This barrier doesn't just affect the boys; it impacts all student athletes who dedicate their time and energy to representing Sherwood. These athletes deserve the opportunity to be part of the larger community, to cheer on their friends, and to feel the support from their peers when they compete. Allowing them to attend events freely acknowledges their hard work and encourages a strong, united school spirit.
Across the country, many schools already implement policies allowing student athletes free admission to games and events. It’s time Sherwood follows suit. Such a policy supports a more inclusive and supportive environment, fostering the growth and morale of all students involved in sports. It also acknowledges the unique role athletes play in promoting school pride.
Furthermore, eliminating this fee for student athletes would not result in a significant financial burden on the school, as the cost saved by these admission fees is minimal compared to the potential for increased community engagement and spirit.
Let’s show our student athletes that we value their contributions and passions beyond the field. By supporting this change, we can strengthen our community, enhance school spirit, and make sure every athlete has the chance to be a part of the entire school's sports culture.
