The Issue

Every day, I witness a remarkable transformation in my autistic daughter, all thanks to our small flock of chickens. Being a part of the 4-H club, she has found an outlet that not only brings her immense joy but also fosters her social interactions with peers and adults alike. Her love for the chickens is profound, to the point where she adoringly calls them her children. Taking care of these animals is not just a chore but a vital part of her daily routine, instilling a sense of responsibility and consistency in her life. Sitting in their company has become her most cherished pastime, and she even presented about them at a Miss Amazing pageant.

Sadly, because of current city regulations, families in La Vista who want to experience the myriad benefits of raising chickens are denied the opportunity. It's not just about having pets; chickens provide eggs, teach life skills, facilitate gardening activities, and are essential for many children participating in the 4-H showing programs.

Other cities have successfully integrated small flocks into urban living with thoughtful regulations, proving that harmony between residents and their feathered companions is achievable. They have set precedents for zoning laws and coop size restrictions, ensuring that community health, cleanliness, and noise are carefully managed. La Vista can benefit from these examples by crafting specific rules allowing families to keep a limited number of hens.

By signing this petition, you will support not just my daughter but many families who stand to gain from raising chickens. Together, we can urge city officials to reevaluate current policies and create allowances for small flocks. Let's foster an environment where all residents, particularly our children, can develop unique skills, connect with nature, and find joy in caring for these wonderful creatures. Join us in advocating for change in La Vista by signing this petition and sharing our vision for a more inclusive and enriched community.
