The Issue

For many years, the senior class at Shorecrest High School has partaken in the cherished tradition of camping out on school grounds. This event marks a rite of passage, a celebratory milestone that honors the end of an era and the beginning of new opportunities. As a community, we feel it is essential to support and celebrate our seniors' hard work, dedication, and resilience throughout their academic journey.

This tradition isn't just about camping; it's about building camaraderie, unity, and a strong sense of identity within the school. It provides students with one last opportunity to bond, create memories, and embrace the spirit of togetherness that Shorecrest High School is famed for. Many alumni fondly recall their camping experience as a highlight of their high school years, and it is heartbreaking to think future students may be denied this experience.

However, recent restrictions have put this tradition at risk. Concerns about safety and logistics have been raised, but we believe that with a collaborative approach, we can address these challenges without sacrificing this valuable experience. We propose a partnership between students, parents, and school administration to develop a comprehensive plan that includes security measures, designated areas for the campout, and necessary supervision to ensure everyone’s safety.

Furthermore, research from communities that host similar events shows that with proper planning and oversight, senior camping events can be held safely and successfully. For instance, schools in neighboring districts have collaborated with local law enforcement and community volunteers to oversee these events, resulting in positive outcomes and lasting memories for all involved.

We urge the Shorecrest school administration to consider the value and significance of this tradition. By working together, we can honor the legacy of Shorecrest Senior Campout and ensure that it continues for generations to come.
