Allow Service Dogs for Mental Conditions without Professional Evaluation

The Issue

I am someone who personally manages having ASD, ADHD, ADD, and OCD every day. Having been privy to the struggles these conditions can impose on an individual, I firmly believe others like me should have the opportunity to have a service dog without the added burden of obtaining approval from a licensed mental professional. This move could be transformative in improving the standard of living for individuals with such challenges.

The pivotal role service dogs play in enhancing the quality of life for individuals managing mental health conditions is not new. Studies have shown that service dogs significantly help those with mental disabilities, notably Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD). They can provide comfort, assist with daily living tasks, and even help manage panic attacks (Source: American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

But the current system demands that individuals must see a licensed mental health professional to acquire a service dog, thus increasing the cost burden and making it inaccessible to many who need this essential service the most. It may also prolong the process, thereby delaying the individual's access to the potential benefits of having a service dog.

Therefore, I call upon relevant authorities and organizations to review the current stipulations and enable individuals with legit mental disabilities to have a service dog, without necessitating the approval of a licensed mental health professional. Please sign this petition to give voice to this important change and make service dogs accessible to even more people in need.
