Our rural community has experienced significant changes in recent years, one of the most notable being the removal of roosters from our homes and farms. Beyond simply being a part of our community's cultural fabric, roosters provide crucial protection for our chickens against the threat of predators. Without roosters, our chickens are vulnerable, facing a higher risk of being attacked, which critically impacts our community's poultry population.

For many of us, maintaining flocks of chickens, inclusive of roosters, reflects our livelihood. The sale of fertilized eggs for hatching generates important income; this is often the way some of us provide for our families and make ends meet. This practice has been gravely affected by the absence of roosters, leading to a detrimental effect on our income and our way of life.

The ban of roosters also causes issues when eggs hatch or citizens purchase from stores and you don't know what gender you're going to receive. This makes it to where citizens dump roosters in the wild where they can't survive and citizens have to end up rescuing them to prevent this issue.

We do not advocate for unchecked, rampant rooster keeping that could lead to taxing the community. Instead, we propose an agreement that respects the rights of all members of our community, giving room to those who rely on roosters for livelihood and protection of their chickens. Let's set guidelines and adhere to them for the benefit of all, striking a fine balance between community standards and individual rights.

The most rural communities across the country continue to keep roosters as a part of their homesteads, embracing the synchrony of life and work that farming communities appreciate. Our community should not be an exception.
