Allow RET teachers to switch from NPS to OPS
The Issue
I am reaching out as a Rehbar-e-Taleem (RET) teacher who has dedicated years of my career to educating the next generation. My appointment was made before January 1, 2010, a time when we were promised the best possible conditions for our future. Recently, the Cabinet decided to include 5 years of ReT service for pensionary benefits, a step that recognizes our contribution. However, many of us are still at a disadvantage when it comes to our retirement savings.
Currently, RET teachers like myself who were appointed before 2010 are part of the National Pension System (NPS), which lacks the assurance and stability offered by the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). The NPS is market-linked, which means our retirement benefits are subject to risky market fluctuations, unlike the OPS that offers a guaranteed pension amount. This public initiative of transferring from NPS to OPS for us, the teachers who have invested time and skill towards shaping the future, is therefore of utmost urgency.
Given that our roles are now acknowledged through pensionary counting, it's only fair that we are provided with an opportunity to switch to OPS. This would ensure a secured financial future, consistent with the pension benefits that other public service employees received, promoting equity and fairness.
The state government has the capability to amend this oversight and create a clear, fair process for those teachers who wish to transition to the OPS from NPS. By opening this option, the government would not only be honoring the commitment made to educators but also align itself with fairness and justice for all its employees.
The concept is simple: teachers who have dedicated their lives to educating children deserve security in their retirement. We are urging educational authorities and policymakers to consider the implications of leaving teachers at the mercy of market instability.
I kindly request the Chief Minister and the Department of Education to acknowledge and rectify this oversight by allowing eligible RET teachers to opt into the Old Pension Scheme. Your support in signing this petition could make a significant impact on the lives of countless educators who have contributed tirelessly to the welfare of our state. Let's advocate for a just transition to a secure retirement plan for all old appointed RET teachers.
