Allow pupils to wear appropriate summer clothing in schools, in hot weather conditions
The Issue
At the moment, many schools across the uk prohibit the wear of appropriate summer clothing in hot weather conditions, for example. Shorts are not permitted to be worn in some schools despite the recent weather reaching 30 degrees. This mainly being secondary/ academies however some primary schools have restricted certain items of clothing. Children of all ages including secondary school, should be encouraged by the school to wear appropriate clothing depending on the weather. Schools need to relax their dress codes/ uniform policies in line with different weather conditions.
The national education union and the gov.uk websites sets out guidelines and precautions schools must consider and implement during episodes of extreme weather, for example, in hot weather, allow children to wear smart shorts. Some school policies state pupils are permitted to wearing a knee length skirt, however wont allow for shorts to be worn. The effects of high temperatures in any working environment is and can be extremely dangerous, studies show that any temperature above 26 degrees is definitely unacceptable.
As a parent i am calling for a change to be made and schools to have a flexable approach to their dress codes in hot weather. To allow pupils to wear smart tailored shorts as part of their uniform. Non branded clothing can be purchased from many places at reasonable prices. A school should not forbid the use of smart shorts to be worn in hot weather.
Below is more evidence on the national education union website.
