Allow public access to Fauquier County's high school tennis courts
The Issue
As a long-time resident of Fauquier County and the proud parent of a 2025 Fauquier High School graduate and a current FHS senior, I am deeply disappointed to see the high school tennis courts locked and inaccessible to the very community whose tax dollars funded them. My family has played tennis on these courts for years and our children have represented FHS as student-athletes on their varsity tennis teams. These courts should continue to be used and enjoyed by Fauquier families, students, and residents who take pride in their local community and schools.
Investments made by taxpayers should benefit the community. The high school courts were previously available to the public for decades and were recently renovated with funds collected from Fauquier residents, promising an updated and safe recreational space. Yet families eager to engage in physical activity, students looking for a place to practice, and tennis enthusiasts across the county are met with locked gates and "no trespassing" signs. This exclusion not only contradicts the principles of public investment but also discourages community engagement and active lifestyles.
Public access to these courts fosters community, enhances health, and inspires a new generation of tennis players. Fauquier County could consider the successful models from neighboring regions, such as Culpeper and Prince William Counties, where high school facilities are open to the public outside school hours. Implementing scheduled access times and signs with posted rules and safety measures could ensure the courts remain in good condition while serving the community.
Please join me in urging the Fauquier County School Board to unlock the tennis courts and make them available to the public once again. Let's ensure that the investments of Fauquier County are truly investments in its students, families, and residents. Please sign this petition today.
