The issue

Growing up in Moree, I saw firsthand the importance of civic engagement and local governance. The decisions made by our councillors directly impact our community, from public infrastructure to local services. Having had the privilege of witnessing and participating in local government processes, I understand the critical nature of councillors being able to effectively perform their duties. However, current regulations prevent councillors from casting votes for key roles through proxy or attending via audio or video conference.

This restriction poses a significant challenge, particularly when unforeseen circumstances prevent councillors from attending crucial meetings in person. It is imperative that we adapt to modern capabilities and ensure that our local government operations remain inclusive and democratic. Allowing councillors to vote remotely or via proxy would ensure broader participation and more representative decision-making within the council.

Statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that as of 2021, more than 25% of people in New South Wales have experienced barriers to physical attendance due to either health, professional, or personal commitments. This applies equally to our public representatives, who should not be disenfranchised by circumstances beyond their control.

Adopting remote and proxy voting can enhance the democratic process, ensuring that all elected voices are heard when pivotal decisions, especially those as crucial as electing the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, are made. This change aligns with practices seen in other councils nationally and worldwide who have embraced modern technology to better serve their communities.

Moreover, implementing a secure and robust system for remote voting can set a precedent for future inclusivity initiatives, allowing Moree Plains to lead as a model of adaptability and progress within local governance.

It's not just a question of convenience; it's a matter of ensuring that all elected officials can actively contribute to the future of Moree, even when they cannot be physically present.

Join me in calling for the empowerment of Moree Plains Councillors to vote via proxy or remote attendance during the September 2026 meeting and beyond. Sign this petition to support a more inclusive, modern, and democratic approach to local government participation.
