When phones are taken away at youth camps, it opens up a host of issues not only for the kids but also for the organizers. With the upcoming 2026 youth camp scheduled from July 27-31, I urge the camp authorities to reconsider the strict phone policy.

At camp, phones aren't just a way to pass the time. They are critical for handling money transactions for merch and snacks, a quick tool for taking notes during sessions, and an essential line of communication with the outside world in case of emergencies. Also worrying parents not being able to contact their children.

A benefit of phones include digital Bibles on phones offering an easy and accessible way for everyone to engage in worship, and it’s something a lot of us prefer.

While I understand the need for certain restrictions to ensure that kids remain engaged in camp activities, an outright ban only leads to frustration and sneaky behaviour. Kids are more likely to respect boundaries when they are guided, not when they are strictly confined. If campers wish to use their phones differently, it is their prerogative, and it should not be something that adversely affects everyone around them.

The current policy limits phone usage to meal times, which doesn't adequately serve the real needs of the campers. It assumes that kids can only handle phones in tightly controlled situations. By allowing regulated but reasonable access, camp leaders can foster trust, teach responsibility, and still encourage kids to participate actively without feeling like they are missing out.

Camp is meant to be an enriching experience, and technology, when used appropriately, can enhance that experience and not detract from it. I believe in the vision of this camp and its organisers, but it’s time to adapt to the digital needs of our times and enhance convenience for everyone involved. Let’s not rob our kids of important tools over fears of distraction.
