The Issue

Private Hire (PH) drivers carry out the same job as Taxis. When people call to book a PH vehicle they ask for a ‘taxi’

West Yorkshire councils are creating more and more bus gates/lanes in an effort to get more people using public transport. This is having a negative impact on capacity, journey times & driver earnings.

At the same time bus services are being cut and reduced.

West Yorkshire is the largest Western European region without a Mass Transit system!

Allowing PH vehicles to use bus lanes will create 40% more capacity for passengers during peak times. It will also help increase driver earnings during the cost of living crisis. It will also help reduce costs to passengers during peak times and help the environment by encouraging people to use public transport (PH Taxis) for faster journey times.

West Yorkshire is home to 3 of the most expensive cities for Taxi Drivers in the whole UK!

Wakefield (2nd) Bradford (3rd) Leeds (12th)

Bus lanes in West Yorkshire are extremely underused due to lack of bus services in West Yorkshire in comparison to other major regions such as Greater Manchester, West Midlands & London

The Mayor of West Yorkshire must take URGENT action to embrace PH vehicles and integrate them into the public transport system more efficiently

PH Vehicles are already allowed to use Bus Lanes in Northern Ireland, Wales, Coventry, Nottingham, Sheffield, Liverpool, Doncaster, Hull, York and other areas.
