Emily Taafe started this petition to Student Finance England and

The government has recently changed the way university courses for medicine, dental and other allied health professions are funded. Whereas, prior to 2017 students were eligible for an NHS bursary, since 2017 they have been subject to the same funding as any other subject (i.e tuition fee loans and maintenance loans from the government). However, the main difference between such courses and 'other' courses is this: medicine, dental and allied health profession courses will be funded as a second degree.

Usually, if a student wishes to take a second Undergraduate degree they have to self-fund, but the Allied Health Profession course are exempt to this, due to a shortage of staff in such professions. In this case, then, a student can complete course such as medicine, radiography, midwifery etc in addition to another degree and still be funded fully by Student Finance.

For some reason, Paramedic Science/Paramedic Practice is not included in this list of Allied Health Professions, meaning that if a student wishes to study Paramedic Science as a second degree, they must self-fund. It seems odd that Paramedics are not treated with the same importance as other Allied Health Professionals.

This petition seeks to show the demand for Paramedic Science as a second degree and urges the government to reevaluate its position. If we win, students will be able to be funded for Paramedic Science courses as a second degree, leading to an increase in the number of paramedics available for our struggling ambulance trusts.

This purpose is important to me as my dream to become a paramedic has been quelled. It is extremely difficult to plan your future career at age eighteen, but this is exactly what we are asked to do when we choose our university courses. Signing this petition will allow those who want to be paramedics a second chance at their goal to help others and save lives.  Surely this can only help our struggling NHS, and stop the discrimination against paramedics compared to other Allied Health Professionals.

Please, please, I urge you. Write to your local MP and let them know this is an issue as this is the only way to get this sorted.
