Allow onshore student visa extensions for genuine students
The issue
Last week, while watching the immigration minister’s speech, I was struck by the new law requiring students to apply for visa extensions from offshore. It's baffling and unfair. These international students contribute significantly to Australia's economy and society, often working diligently alongside their studies, maintaining good academic standing, and adhering to all legal requirements.
Requiring them to return to their home countries to apply for an extension is not only disruptive to their education but also to their lives. Imagine setting aside your studies, risking your academic progress, and the potential financial burden involved with traveling back home only to reapply for a visa that allows you to continue the journey you are already on.
Australia has always prided itself on being a land of opportunity, embracing people from diverse cultural backgrounds and allowing them to thrive. International students bring invaluable perspectives and skills to our universities and the broader community. In return, they pay substantial tuition fees and often more in taxes than many locals. This new requirement could deter promising students from choosing Australia as their academic destination.
Instead of implementing blanket rules that could punish the very students who enhance our education system and economy, let’s propose a fair solution. Genuine students should have the opportunity to extend their visas onshore. Rigorous checks can still ensure they meet academic and legal standards without disrupting their lives.
By allowing these extensions to occur onshore, Australia would demonstrate its commitment to supporting international students, recognizing their contributions, and fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. This is a chance to move beyond bureaucratic hurdles and embrace a practical, compassionate solution.
Join me in calling upon the Australian government and the Department of Home Affairs to reassess and revoke this offshore application requirement. Let's support our international students who already contribute so much to the fabric of our society. Please sign this petition to urge a change for equitable and sensible visa policies.
