Hi all, I just wanted to reach out to let you know we’ve just passed 219 signatures on our petition! Thank you so much for your support! Will you help me to get more support by sharing this petition with ten other people? If enough of us sign we can’t be ignored! Here’s a link to share https://www.change.org/p/allow-not-covid-related-just-cause-evictions

Here is my story:

My family has been squatted from our own house and now we are homeless. We bought a large beautiful house for our family last year but we were not ready to move in right away and we decided to wait until the end of the school year to smoothly transition the family into the new home. Since the house was vacant, we decided to help a lady and rented it short term to her for 2 months. Then she slowly brought in another tenant (her friend) and we signed a short term rental agreement with this lady as well. Both were supposed to be there for 2 months (until December 31, 2019). We verbally agreed that they can remain for a few more months... and then the pandemic happened and they stopped paying and refused to move out  (even though they both knew that we are moving in).

Worse of all, they brought in many other people to the property, converted the garage/storage room into a  room, and installed AC in that unit as the house was getting small for all their unauthorized guests. At this point, I've lost count on how many people live in my house. No one pays rent, and I can't exercise my rights in court and evict them. Yet, I keep paying the mortgage, property taxes, insurance, maintenance, and utilities (which are over $2,000 each month consistently (that is utilities alone), etc.  My bank account is being drained out. I do not have a stable place to live at the moment as they've forged and tricked me that they are moving out on July 25 (we gave them cash for keys and offered to forgive all unpaid rents and utilities) and yet, they stayed but I already lost my previous rental place (we were renting as well). Now we live in Airbnb and I am terrified by the fact that my children will not have permanent housing once the school starts.

Also, if you have a similar issue right now please don't hesitate and send me your story and I can update everyone
