Allow Non-EU residents to travel back home

Allow Non-EU residents to travel back home
The Issue
Recently, processing times for Work Permits at Migrationsverket (Sweden's migration agency) have greatly increased. It now takes a minimum of 6 months to renew a work permit and that is if one is using the fast-track approach. Others without a certified employer have even longer times with it taking 15 months to renew their residence permits. We understand that due to Covid and the war going on in Ukraine that there are many applications and not much can be done regarding long waiting times. However, one thing that is incomprehensible is the rule that if one leaves the country while waiting for a decision, they may not be allowed back. Unfortunately, this only affects citizens from countries that require a visa to enter the EU whereas others are free to travel and come back as they please. It is a huge injustice that residents who are here working and paying taxes are unable to return to the country and resume their jobs should they decide to leave. Many need to visit their families, deal with paperwork back home, or just take a break. Other EU countries allow residents waiting for a decision to travel and come back to those countries. Migrationsverket have now started issuing D-visas for people who need to travel provided it is for business related reasons. We ask that a solution can be found wherein residents can travel and be able to come back and resume their work in Sweden while waiting for a decision. Perhaps the D visa can be extended to allow non-business related travel as well.
