Allow Nicknames on Year 12 Jackets

The issue

At Wantirna College, a tradition that's dear to our senior students is wearing a personalized Year 12 jacket. These jackets symbolize the culmination of years of hard work, however, there remains a restriction that prevents us from fully expressing our individuality and school spirit: the prohibition of nicknames on these jackets.

Nicknames have always been a fun and personable way for students to showcase an aspect of their identity. Allowing nicknames can foster belonging and boost school morale. Many schools across Australia already embrace this practice, enabling students to carry a piece of their bond and memories into the future.

The argument against nicknames often revolves around potential for inappropriate language or ridicule. However, we can put systems in place to pre-approve nicknames, ensuring they maintain the school’s values.. Comparable systems work effectively in numerous educational institutions without issue.

By allowing nicknames, we encourage creativity, facilitate diversity, and enable personal expression. This is a widely accepted practice that has been shown to enhance student connection and pride.

We call upon the Wantirna College administration to reconsider their stance and permit nicknames on Year 12 jackets. Please support us in promoting school unity and individuality by signing this petition. Your signature will help us celebrate our final year in a way that truly represents each of us.
