The Issue

Imagine sitting in a lecture hall, head pounding, fever rising, trying desperately to focus on the professor's voice. This is the reality for many students at Washington & Jefferson College (W&J), where current absence policies force them to attend classes even when they are unwell. As a student who has experienced this firsthand, I can attest to the detrimental effects these policies have, not only on individual health but also on the wellbeing of the entire student community.

The institution's strict absence policy provides little room for students to miss classes without risking their academic standing. This pressure compels students to attend classes while sick, inevitably spreading illnesses to their peers, creating a never-ending cycle of shared sickness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infectious diseases like influenza and the common cold is to stay home when sick. However, the fear of penalization and falling behind in coursework prevents students from taking this essential step.

Statistics show that absenteeism due to health-related issues is a significant concern in educational institutions across the United States. However, these issues are exacerbated when students are not supported by flexible policies. At W&J, students pay substantial tuition fees for their education and should not be forced to choose between their health and their education due to inflexible absence policies.

A reasonable and actionable solution would be to revisit and adjust the current absence policy, allowing for a fair increase in the number of allowable absences. This can be achieved by acknowledging that temporary health challenges do not equate to a lack of commitment or diligence. Rather than placing undue burden on students, the college should trust them to manage their absences responsibly and work in conjunction with health data to set a realistic policy that prioritizes health and safety.

It's time for W&J College to implement a more compassionate and pragmatic approach to student absences. By doing so, the institution will not only protect the health of its students but also reinforce its commitment to fostering a supportive and thriving learning environment.

Join us in urging W&J College to revise their absence policy to better reflect the needs and realities of its student body. Your signature can make a difference in promoting a healthier, more balanced academic life for all. Please sign this petition to support change at W&J.
