The Issue

When my sister and I were struggling in school, we didn't have the means or courage to ask for help. The mental strain we experienced led us to be sent to Hillsides Cares for daily mental health check-ins over the summer. There, we met other children, some even younger than us, who had been placed in Residential Care for attempting to end their lives. It was a wake-up call on the importance of mental health and the dire need for support systems for students.

In today's fast-paced world, students face immense pressure from academics, extracurricular activities, social environments, and personal expectations. Mental health is as crucial as physical health, yet there is a stark lack of acknowledgment and support within our educational system. House Bill 2191 in Oregon sets a precedent for recognizing mental health as a legitimate reason for taking a break, just like a physical illness. California needs to follow suit and allow students the right to take mental health days.

The World Health Organization reports that 10-20% of children and adolescents experience mental disorders. Untreated, these issues can severely impact their development, academic performance, and social relationships. By permitting mental health days, we offer a vital opportunity for students to recharge, seek professional help, and return to school better equipped to handle their challenges.

Moreover, the stigma tied to mental health must be eradicated. By institutionalizing mental health days, California schools can send a powerful message: it's okay to not be okay, and seeking help is a strength, not a weakness.

Implementing mental health days is not just about days off. It's about providing the framework for schools to recognize and address mental health issues proactively. Training teachers, providing access to counselors, and creating a culture of open dialogue are essential steps forward.

Join me in urging California lawmakers to introduce legislation similar to Oregon's House Bill 2191, allowing students to take mental health days as needed. Sign this petition to support the mental well-being of our students and foster a healthier, more understanding school environment.
