Allow Medical Assistants to become LMA.

The Issue

To get Medical Assistants licensed. To get better pay and to be recognized. Mandatory licensure for nurses became law in 1935, but due to World War II was not enforced until 1947. The terms Registered Nurse and Licensed Practice Nurse (vocational) are now legally protected titles in all states. Registered Nurses fought to get registered and licensed.

We, as Medical Assistants are doing the same job duties and their scope of practice is of the same as an RN if not more depending on the practice we work for and what they are comfortable with us doing. THIS is determined by the LAW in each state and how the licensed we work under in interpreted. Why are we not getting paid & recognition to do the same. RN used to be for nursing homes and hospitals but now they are taking over clinical practices.

I have been practicing as a National Certified Medical Assistant working in Correctional Healthcare for over 20 years and I love what I do. I have trained nurses how to do their job only for them to turn around and tell me how to a duty should be done. Most MA's I know also have their Bachelor's as well. We should have equal pay for those degrees. Being a Medical Assistant has kept me from job advancement, and frankly I feel discriminated against because I am a Medical Assistant. I have had people say well why don't you just get your RN licensed. My response every time is "no I love being a MA if I wanted to be a RN, I would have went to school to be a RN.

Either get MA's licensed or stop having Associate Degrees for MA with the promise of nothing more than one that has 6 months degree. Not sure how to go about getting the Board of Medicine & AAMA to realize that we have had enough and we would like to see change. We would like to become Licensed Medical Assistant. Change starts somewhere. #aama #ncmanow

Not only do I have the right to stand up for myself, but I have the responsibility. I can’t ask somebody else to stand up for me if I won’t stand up for myself. And once you stand up for yourself, you’d be surprised that people say ‘Can I be of help? – Maya Angelou
