Allow Medical and Recreational Marijuana Dispensaries in Wilmington, Ohio

Allow Medical and Recreational Marijuana Dispensaries in Wilmington, Ohio

The Issue

To: Wilmington City Council and Mayor

Issue: Despite the state of Ohio passing Issue 2 in 2023, which legalized the recreational use of marijuana and already allowed medical marijuana, Wilmington, the county seat of Clinton County, has not adapted to these changes. Clinton County voters supported Issue 2 by a significant margin, demonstrating community support for both medical and recreational marijuana use. However, Wilmington has yet to permit even a single medical marijuana dispensary, let alone consider establishments for recreational use. This discrepancy between state law and local regulations limits access for patients and consumers alike, depriving them of the benefits and convenience that come with local dispensaries.

Solution: We, the undersigned, call on the Wilmington City Council and Mayor to align with Ohio’s state law and the will of the people by permitting and facilitating the establishment of both medical and recreational marijuana dispensaries within the city limits. This move will not only respect the rights and needs of patients and consumers but also harness new economic opportunities, including job creation and increased tax revenues that can be reinvested in our community.

Why It Matters: The legalization of marijuana in Ohio was a step forward in recognizing the medical benefits of cannabis, respecting personal freedoms, and seizing economic opportunities. Wilmington should not lag behind in these advancements. By allowing dispensaries, Wilmington can improve accessibility for those in need, stimulate local economic growth, and ensure our community benefits fully from state laws voted on by its citizens.

Conclusion: It’s time for the City Council and Mayor of Wilmington to reflect the will of its residents, Clinton County, and the state of Ohio by embracing the benefits of medical and recreational marijuana dispensaries. Let’s not miss out on the advantages our neighbors enjoy.

Pass the necessary legislation for dispensaries for which the majority of citizens expressed a desire.
