The Issue

For the past nine years, I have been part of the Chapin cluster, attending schools within this community as a student of two LexRich 5 employees. It has shaped who I am, equipping me with a solid education, friendships, and cherished memories. However, the upcoming changes in zoning threaten the continuity of my education by preventing me from attending my current high school (Chapin High) next year.

The Lexington-Richland School District 5 has placed restrictions on the choice of schools for students whose parents are district employees. This is an injustice not only to me and my brother, but also to countless other students in similar situations. Being forced to depart from familiar surroundings impacts not only academic performance, but also emotional well-being. Students thrive in environments where they feel comfortable, supported, and welcome. Forcing transitions diminishes this crucial foundation. School choice should remain an option, especially for families that have dedicated their careers to educating students.

A practical solution is to allow LexRich 5 employee students the ability to choose between schools within the district. This choice respects their needs and their parents' contributions to education. This flexibility also encourages higher job satisfaction among district employees, building a supportive community for both educators and students alike.

We urge the Lexington-Richland School District 5 to revise current policies and honor the commitment of their employees by providing their children the option to choose their school. Let us work towards a more equal policy that recognizes the important role school choice plays in the educational, emotional, and mental development of students.

Please sign this petition to support school choice for LexRich 5 employee students, securing continuity, stability, and fairness in their educational experiences.
