As a frequent traveler, I find the current pet policy of Amtrak trains limiting. The joy of my travels is often dampened by the fact that I cannot bring along my 35-pound dog. This sentiment is shared by many other pet owners who would prefer to travel with their pets but are restricted due to the current policy that only allows dogs up to 20 pounds.

Amtrak's pet policy should be expanded to allow larger dogs, up to 45 pounds, with carriers. Furthermore, a dedicated 'pet-friendly' train car for pets and their owners could greatly enhance the travel experience for both parties and encourage more people to choose train travel.

According to a survey conducted by AAA and Best Western International, more than half of U.S pet owners take their cats and dogs with them when they travel (USA Today). With such high numbers of travelers preferring not to leave their pets behind, it's clear that an expanded pet policy could potentially attract more passengers.
