Allow Lanetta to serve as the Illinois Board of Higher Ed Rep at Chicago State University
The Issue
On August 29th, 2023, I was thrilled to learn about the opportunity to run for the Student Government Association (SGA) at Chicago State University. However, due to a series of unfortunate events and miscommunication, I have been unjustly denied the chance to represent my fellow students as the Illinois Board of Higher Ed (IBHE) Representative.
My personal story begins when I met with Dean Antwone Cameron on August 30th. During our meeting, he informed me about the SGA elections and assured me that an email had been sent out on August 2nd inviting all eligible students to run for various positions within SGA. Unfortunately, I never received this crucial email, which he verified I never did.
Recognizing this oversight, Dean Cameron advised me to speak with Assistant Dean Demetrick Coleman, who oversees SGA matters. Following his guidance, I approached Dean Coleman and explained my situation. Despite applying late due to not receiving the initial email invitation, he granted me permission to participate in the election process after confirming that I met all requirements.
With great enthusiasm and determination, I actively campaigned during a short period on September 14th when voting went live for a mere 12 hours. It was an intense but exciting time as candidates vied for their respective positions within SGA.
However, on September 23rd - a week after voting concluded - devastating news reached me: despite successfully participating in every step of the election process and garnering support from my peers through their votes, it was suddenly declared that my application had been deemed ineligible due to its late submission. Which I believe is due to me winning the actual vote.
To make matters worse, it was only then that I became aware of a clause which excluded individuals who applied late from running for or obtaining the IBHE student representative seat in SGA. This clause had never been mentioned during the application process, leaving me blindsided and robbed of the opportunity I had rightfully earned.
I firmly believe that this decision is unjust and goes against the principles of fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity. It is disheartening to witness a democratic process being undermined by bureaucratic technicalities that were never properly communicated to candidates.
Therefore, I kindly request your support in rectifying this situation by signing this petition. By doing so, you will help bring attention to my case and advocate for my rightful inclusion as the Illinois Board of Higher Ed Representative at Chicago State University's SGA.
Together, we can ensure that all eligible students are given a fair chance to participate in student governance and represent their peers effectively. Let us stand united against arbitrary exclusions and fight for a more inclusive democratic process within our university community.
Thank you for your support!
