Allow Kroger employees access to water at work stations
The Issue
Working long shifts on our feet as cashiers and baggers in the Arizona heat is challenging enough without being deprived of basic hydration. Recently, Kroger implemented a policy prohibiting us from having bottled water at our work stations, which had previously been allowed if in a spill-proof container. This new rule makes it excessively difficult to stay hydrated, impacting our health and performance during work hours.
Many of us work shifts ranging from four to eight hours, during which we receive minimal breaks. Specifically, during a four-hour shift, we are afforded only one 10-minute break. For a six-hour shift, there's just a single 15-minute break, and in an eight-hour period, there are two 10-minute breaks. These short breaks are not enough time to accomplish all necessary tasks such as using the restroom, eating a snack, and most importantly, drinking water to remain hydrated in the desert climate we endure.
Studies highlight the importance of staying hydrated for maintaining focus, energy, and overall health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend regular hydration, especially in hotter climates like Arizona, to prevent heat-related illnesses and fatigue, which could severely compromise job performance and worker safety.
We urge Kroger to reconsider this decision and allow bottled water or spill-proof containers at our workstations, especially in environments prone to high temperatures. Such an amendment is crucial not only for our health but also for maintaining an efficient, healthy workplace where we can perform our duties to the best of our abilities without fear of dehydration.
Join us in advocating for this necessary change for the welfare of Kroger employees by signing this petition. Let's stand together to ensure that basic human needs, such as access to water, are not compromised by workplace policies.
