Allow kids to ride their electric dirt bikes in Osage.
The Issue
My son and his friends have poured their savings into purchasing electric dirt bikes. These bikes have been a source of joy, adventure, and community for them, safely exploring our neighborhoods and parks. However, the recent city ordinance banning the riding of these bikes has created an unnecessary barrier and stripped them of this thrill.
In our community, it's not uncommon to see children doubling on stand-up scooters, zipping around without seating or proper balance. Paradoxically, this poses a far greater risk than an electric dirt bike which has the stability and speed comparable to a regular bicycle, typically not exceeding 20 mph.
The ordinance paints electric dirt bikes as dangerous without recognizing the context in which they are used. These bikes are often built with robust safety features such as wider wheels for better grip and seats for stability. While promoting outdoor activity, they provide children with mobility and independence in a world increasingly bound to sedentary lifestyles.
What we propose is to engage with local authorities to reassess this ordinance. We believe that with clear, designated areas for riding, proper education around road safety, and awareness campaigns for responsible usage, we can protect our children while allowing them the freedom to use their hard-earned bikes responsibly.
By signing this petition, you’re advocating for a balanced approach that recognizes the benefits of electric dirt bikes and seeks to integrate them into our community safely. Let's promote outdoor fun and responsible riding as a means of enriching our children's lives and experiences. Please join us in supporting this petition to remove the ban on electric dirt bikes for kids in our city.
