The Issue

Note:  One argument I heard was the meet takes too long.  I think a good compromise would be to combine the divisions into one race for JV, FS.  So, 4 more races.  This was already done for the JV race in the past.

I am passionate about cross country in the San Joaquin Section, and I have witnessed, firsthand, the excitement and dedication of young athletes as they strive for excellence in their sport. In the past, the CIF San Joaquin Section has recognized and celebrated the achievements of underclassmen by allowing them to qualify for the section meet. This opportunity has been vital for young athletes, providing them the platform to showcase their hard work and potential.

However, I am deeply concerned about the recent decision that, starting in the 2026 season, will only permit varsity teams to move on to the section competitions. This change dismisses the efforts and achievements of underclassmen, who deserve recognition for their performance throughout the season, just like their varsity counterparts. It's crucial to remember that these underclassmen represent the future of cross country; nurturing their talent now enhances their development and continues the long-standing tradition of excellence in our region.

Allowing all divisions, including JV boys/girls, F/S girls, as well as sophomore and freshman boys to qualify for section meets, affirms their efforts and inspires younger athletes to remain committed and passionate about their sport.  Even if the new version of section combines the top 3 or 4 teams per division who qualify at sub-subsections into one race each for JV and FS boys and girls at sections.  (so 4 extra races).  Moreover, this participation plays a pivotal role in developing leadership and teamwork skills, as these young students may eventually assume varsity positions and guide the next generation of runners.

There’s no shortage of evidence to suggest that inclusion in competitive sports during high school builds character, enhances academic performance, and promotes healthy lifestyles. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, students who participate in athletics are more likely to achieve academic success and less likely to engage in substance abuse or drop out of school. Keeping this in mind, restricting underclassmen from participating in sectional meets inadvertently stifles these positive outcomes.

I urge the CIF San Joaquin Section to reconsider its decision and continue the tradition of allowing underclassmen the chance to qualify for the section cross country meet. By doing so, we foster an environment that values growth, effort, and sportsmanship for all athletes, regardless of their class.

Please join me in ensuring that all young athletes are given the opportunity to shine. Sign this petition to support underclassmen in their pursuit of cross country excellence and a brighter future.
