The Issue
Living at 318 Commons on the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) campus was supposed to be a way to maintain my independence and prioritize my nutritional needs. Unfortunately, I find myself trapped by a mandatory meal plan, a financial burden I cannot sustain. The lack of quality and variety in the meal options has even resurfaced some of my personal struggles with maintaining a healthy diet.
A significant advantage of residing at 318 Commons is the access to kitchen facilities, unlike the Student Living Center (SLC). This allows students like myself to prepare meals that cater to our unique dietary needs and preferences. Being forced into a meal plan negates this opportunity, creating unnecessary financial stress and dietary challenges.
Nationwide, students face financial burdens that impact their academic performance and mental health. A research report published by Temple University and the Wisconsin HOPE Lab showed that around 36% of university students face food insecurity. Forcing students into a meal plan they can't afford or that doesn't meet their needs only exacerbates these problems.
The University should provide students with the flexibility to opt-out of the meal plan. By doing this, UMR can not only alleviate financial stress but also promote student well-being and autonomy. Students should have the right to choose what works best for their nutritional and financial needs.
I urge the University of Minnesota Rochester administration to allow students residing at 318 Commons the option to opt-out of the mandatory meal plan. Let's ensure that choices about dining plans enhance, rather than hinder, our college experience. Sign this petition to support our plea for choice and flexibility.
