The Issue

From my experience, being a high school student in New York State is challenging enough without the added stress of not being able to listen to music during my own free time – like lunch breaks and study halls. That's why I'm starting this petition. For many of us, music isn't just entertainment; it’s a tool for relaxation, focus, and stress management.

In today's fast-paced and often overstimulating school environment, students need moments of respite. Study halls and lunch periods should serve as opportunities for students to decompress and recharge. Allowing the use of headphones for music during these times can significantly improve student well-being and academic performance. Research consistently supports the notion that music can enhance concentration and mood. According to the American Psychological Association, music can reduce stress, enhance positive emotions, and improve focus, which are all beneficial in a school setting.

Furthermore, the freedom to choose our way of zoning in or out during personal time fosters a sense of autonomy and responsibility. Many schools across the nation already permit headphones during these times with success, reporting increased student satisfaction and no notable disruption in school discipline or order.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a small yet impactful change that respects students' personal time and mental health needs. We are asking the New York State Department of Education to update school policies to allow the use of headphones during lunch and study halls. This policy change acknowledges the role of music in student life and the need for personal time in our busy academic schedules.

Help us create a more supportive and flexible school environment. Please sign this petition to voice your support for music-friendly study halls and lunch breaks in NYS schools. Your signature can make a difference!
