The Issue

For years, we have been putting up Halloween lights and decorations in our neighborhood in Bay City, bringing joy and excitement to the children and families in the area. We love seeing the children’s faces light up with wonder as they pass by our festive displays. For many families in our community, this has become a tradition that marks the start of the Halloween season.

Unfortunately, we have recently been informed that our long-standing Halloween lights may be at risk of being removed under city regulations. These lights are not just decorations, they create a safe, fun environment for families to enjoy Halloween right in their neighborhood.

We understand the need for certain regulations, but we believe that there can be a way to find a compromise that allows these lights to stay. Perhaps a special permit can be granted just for this year and next year we'll put them up a different way to follow the ordinance.

Our goal is to continue this tradition that promotes neighborhood unity and provides joy to our children. Halloween festivities in our city are not complete without these beloved displays.

Please join us in urging the city manager of Bay City to reconsider these regulations and allow us to keep our Halloween lights up. By signing this petition, you're supporting a time-honored tradition that brings smiles and happiness to our community.

Responded
Thank you to everyone who has shared their thoughts and concerns on this issue. I was just recently made aware of the situation and I want you to know that I take community traditions like this seriously. Neighborhood celebrations and displays, especially ones that bring joy to families and children, are part of what makes Bay City such a special place to live. At the same time, I recognize the City has ordinances and processes in place that sometimes create challenges to ensure the safety of the Community. I personally would like to work together with City staff, Commissioners, the homeowner, and neighbors to see what can be done. My goal is to explore options that balance safety and ordinance compliance while also respecting the tradition that has become so meaningful to the community. I appreciate the passion and care residents have shown, and I look forward to being part of the conversation on finding a solution. Mayor Christopher R. Girard
