Allow Guys to Join Mountain View High School Cheer Team

Allow Guys to Join Mountain View High School Cheer Team
The Issue
I have always wanted to join the Mountain View High School cheer team. Many of the current cheerleaders at my school have seen my enthusiasm and skills and have told me that I am really good at cheering. However, they also mentioned that they didn't want to switch the current team setup because for some reason, it doesn't allow guys to join. This makes me feel like I'm being left out, especially since every other school in our district, here in Mesa, AZ, has already embraced diversity by allowing guys to be part of the cheer team.
This is more than just an opportunity for me. Cheerleading is an incredible physical and creative outlet that should be accessible to everyone regardless of gender. By allowing guys to join the cheer team at Mountain View High School, we will not only be following in the footsteps of progressive schools around us but also set a warm example of our core values: equality and acceptance.
You may be wondering why this change is necessary – the answer lies in the idea that inclusivity in schools fosters a richer learning environment and strengthened community ties. A study published in the Journal of School Health emphasizes how creating teams in schools can harbor a sense of belonging and collaboration, both of which are crucial for emotional and social development.
We're calling upon the administration of Mountain View High School to rethink and revise their current policies about team membership. It's time to open the doors and embrace students of all genders in the cheerleading activities.
