The Issue

Currently, Go-Go music is not listed as an available genre option when uploading music to the major DSP's (Digital streaming providers) like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Youtube Music and Tidal, among others.

Please sign the petition to have the DSP's add Go - Go as a Genre, so that releases being uploaded to these platforms are being categorized correctly.

Thank you!!!

But Why should I care?

For existing go - go fans:

Having songs /albums released correctly under "go - go" as a genre will show the people and computers at these companies that go - go is its own genre (not funk or r&b, or hip - hop)with songs/albums being released and once the algorithms start to pick up on it, then it creates more streams for the artists, which translates into money, which then incentivizes go - go artists to create and release more music.

For those unfamiliar with go - go:

Go - Go music is deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of Washington, D.C., holds immense significance to both the city's residents and music enthusiasts worldwide. Developed in the 1970s, Go-Go music combines elements of funk, R&B, and soul, with distinctive percussion and call-and-response vocals. It has served as a platform for local musicians, highlighting their talents and providing a unique sound that captures the essence of the city, was instrumental in the formation of hip - hop music and was signed into law as the official music of Washington DC in 2019.

Despite its rich history and widespread popularity, DC Go-Go remains marginalized within the music industry, mostly due to its almost exclusively live performance culture and sparse releases of recordings. No doubt that this contributes to the lack of representation of the genre by the streaming services.  However by failing to provide a dedicated genre category for Go-Go music, platforms like those listed above unintentionally contribute to the underrepresentation of this important cultural phenomenon and dampen the artists initiative to release new music. It results in Go-Go releases being misclassified under other genres, making it harder for fans to discover and enjoy this distinct style of music and harder for larger entities within the music industry to recognize the amount of go - go releases per year as artists and labels have no choice but to upload their music under other genre categories.

Adding DC Go-Go Music as a recognized genre on these platforms would demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity, cultural diversity, and the promotion of musical heritage and could quite literally change the trajectory of one of the most influential music genres in American History. It would open up opportunities for Go-Go artists to gain visibility, connect with their fanbase, and potentially reach new audiences across the globe. Moreover, it would help preserve and celebrate the unique musical traditions of Washington, D.C.
