Allow Girls to Wear Standard-Length Shorts in Hoover Schools

The Issue

This issue is deeply personal to me, as I have watched women be systematically oppressed in our society day in and day out. The divide between what girls and boys are allowed to wear in schools, particularly the prohibition of standard-length shorts for girls, echoes a greater societal problem in which women are unfairly sexualised. Boys are allowed to wear shorts, so why can't girls? This isn't just about clothing - it's about challenging the harmful and outdated norms that govern us. It's about standing up against the unjust practice of sexualising and objectifying young girls based on their clothing choice. This problem had been resolved in other schools surrounding ours. It is Hoovers turn to take the next step.

According to statistics from the National Women's Law Center, girls, especially girls of color, are more likely to be disciplined for dress-code violations than boys — yet another demonstration of the ingrained systemic bias. This stark difference does nothing but reinforce gender stereotypes and stands as an affront to the idea of equality.

Let's allow girls the right to wear shorts of standard length, just as boys do, in schools. Let's put an end to this double standard, and to the perverse notion that what a girl wears is an invitation to degrade her. Schools should be a place for learning and growth, not sexual objectification and discrimination. Sign this petition today to help take a stand against gender inequality in schools.
