Allow girls to wear pants at Queen's College High School
The Issue
Petition for the Option to Wear Pants at Queen’s College
As the 21st century unfolds, traditional societal norms continue to evolve, challenging us to reconsider practices that no longer reflect the needs of modern society. One such practice is the uniform policy at Queen’s College, which requires girls to wear skirts. As a current student of this esteemed institution, I believe every girl deserves the freedom to choose an attire that aligns with her comfort and needs. This petition is not intended to disregard our school’s traditions, but rather to encourage a progressive change that accommodates the evolving needs of its students. Therefore, I advocate for the introduction of pants as an alternative uniform option for girls at the College.
The current dress code affects more than just our appearance; it influences our daily experiences within the academic environment. One argument often associated with skirts is their connection to femininity. However, femininity is diverse and cannot be defined by a single style of clothing. Wearing pants does not make a girl any less feminine, nor should a student’s choice of uniform determine how she expresses herself.
For some girls, skirts present daily challenges concerning coverage and comfort. Others find their tailored design restrictive, limiting their freedom of movement during school activities. While some students may prefer skirts, others would benefit from the practicality and security that pants provide. If our school values the wellbeing and academic success of every student, why should girls have to compromise their comfort when an alternative could be offered?
Schools worldwide have adopted more flexible uniform policies, recognizing that students have different needs and preferences. Providing a choice between skirts and pants would allow Queen’s College to uphold its standards of professionalism while acknowledging that inclusivity and tradition can coexist. A uniform should unite students through a shared sense of identity, not require every student to experience that identity in the same exact way.
It is time for Queen’s College to take a progressive step forward. By introducing pants as an alternative for girls in Fourth Form and upwards, we would demonstrate that our institution is willing to listen to its students and adapt to a changing society. This is not a demand to abolish skirts, but a request to make room for choice. Every girl should have the opportunity to learn and thrive in a uniform that allows her to feel confident and comfortable.
