Allow foreign exchange students to join graduation ceremonies
The Issue
Every year, thousands of foreign exchange students fly to the United States with dreams of experiencing the quintessential high school journey—sports, dances, lifelong friendships, and the crowning achievement of attending a graduation ceremony. This significant milestone, the culmination of years of hard work, is an integral part of the American educational experience.
However, in the Argyle Independent School District, foreign exchange students find themselves left out of this momentous occasion. Despite having been part of the school community, having studied, participated in sports, cultural exchanges, and involved themselves in school activities, they are excluded from walking across the stage as honorary graduates during the graduation ceremony.
Many school districts across the nation already allocate a spot for exchange students in their ceremonies, recognizing the unique contributions these students make, and granting them the honor of participating. They understand that providing this recognition is not only a matter of respect and inclusion but also a celebration of cultural diversity and international camaraderie. It is understood by the exchange students that the participation in the ceremony is symbolic and they are typically not graduating from the school they have attended (unless they actually have met those requirements).
The exclusion of foreign exchange students from such an important event sends a message contrary to the values of inclusivity and diversity that schools aim to promote. It underlines the importance of fostering a welcoming atmosphere that respects and values all students, regardless of their country of origin.
We urge the Argyle ISD Board Members to reconsider their current practices and allow foreign exchange students to partake in the graduation ceremonies as honorary graduates. This simple yet meaningful gesture will elevate the school’s reputation as an inclusive and culturally rich environment that values international exchange and broadens the horizons of all students.
By allowing these students to walk across the stage, we affirm their place in our community and acknowledge their hard work and achievements as part of our collective educational journey. Let us show them that they are a valued part of our community and friends for life.
