The Issue

For years, I've faced a frustrating roadblock that has impacted my ability to drive freely and efficiently. Despite owning cars that are duly insured, I find myself unable to drive them because the insurance policies are not registered under my name. This rigidity in the system stands in the way of practical and shared vehicle use, creating unnecessary financial and logistical burdens.

Currently, insurance policies often mandatorily require the insured vehicle to be exclusively associated with a single named driver's policy. This approach feels outdated in a world where flexibility is crucial for our fast-paced lives. Many people – families, friends, and close-knit communities – share vehicles for numerous reasons including financial savings, reducing their carbon footprint, and managing busy schedules. The option to drive any car that has a valid insurance policy should be as simple as it sounds.

In countries like the UK, where Named Driver insurance offers flexibility to insure multiple drivers, the concept has already proved to be functional and beneficial. Adopting a similar model could relieve individuals like me from having to take out several individual policies. It makes practical sense, reduces administrative hassle, and ensures broader accessibility to insured vehicles.

This is more than just convenience; it's about fairness and financial prudence. Without the need for separate insurance policies, we can avoid redundant expenses and channel our energy and resources more effectively. Implementing such change could lead to decreased overall insurance costs, as insurers might streamline operations and pass savings onto consumers.

I urge lawmakers, regulators, and insurance companies to reconsider and adapt our car insurance policies to reflect modern societal needs. We need a system where, as long as a vehicle has valid insurance on any driver or any name, it should be permissible for any licensed driver to operate it legally without requiring a separate policy.

Please sign this petition to advocate for a change in car insurance laws that will allow for inclusive, cost-effective, and shared vehicle use, reflecting the dynamic ways in which people are living, working, and traveling today.
