The Issue

In our school systems today, the female students face unnecessary challenges that could easily be alleviated with some simple changes. Young women should attend school with the confidence that their personal needs will be accommodated without hesitation or fear of embarrassment.

Many schools have strict policies on restroom breaks, often limiting the frequency and timing of when students can attend to their basic biological necessities. For female students, this policy can be particularly restrictive due to the unique demands of their feminine hygiene needs. Being unable to access the restroom as required can lead not only to discomfort but also to significant distractions from their education.

Moreover, many schools prohibit students from carrying purses or bags to have immediate access to essential items like feminine products. This restriction forces students to navigate their school day without the necessary resources, impacting both their physical and mental well-being.

Feminine hygiene is not a choice, it's a reality. It's time we acknowledge that female students deserve the same respect and access to facilities as everyone else. According to Child Mind Institute, students perform better academically when their environment is supportive of their personal needs, which includes accommodating their health requirements.

Schools elsewhere have recognized the importance of this issue, implementing policies that allow female students unlimited restroom breaks and the ability to carry personal bags for hygiene products. In Clovis, California, for instance, schools have seen positive reports from both students and school staff on the improved wellbeing and academic performance of their female student body after such changes were incorporated.

By allowing unlimited restroom breaks and the carrying of personal bags for necessary products, we make school a more inclusive and equitable space for everyone.

We must urge our educational authorities to review these restrictive policies and take immediate action. Female students should be able to focus on their studies rather than worry about when they can next use the bathroom or access personal supplies.
