The Issue

Exodus Drive is more than just a street in Plantersville, South Carolina; it is a cornerstone of our community's identity. For countless residents, including myself, Exodus Drive is the road we grew up on. It has served as the backbone of our community, binding us together through shared experiences, memories, and history. For years, this road has held its name, and in doing so, it has held onto the essence of what makes Plantersville special.

The proposal to change the name of Exodus Drive to Johnny Morant Highway is a decision that could erase not only a name but also the memories and heritage associated with it. Johnny Morant may have made contributions, but not ones that resonate throughout the entirety of Plantersville. It seems unjust to alter the name without the consent of the people who call this community home.

Changing the name of a road is never just about a name; it impacts the community's emotional ties to their surroundings. In this case, switching from Exodus Drive to Johnny Morant Highway does not reflect the collective voice of those who live here. We must remember that names, much like history, preserve the spirit of places and people.

I urge the local authorities and decision-makers to reconsider this name change proposal. Exodus Drive has been and should continue to be a symbol of our shared journey and identity. Re-evaluate this decision and please let the voices of Plantersville guide the choice. We ask for an opportunity to be heard and for our rich history to be honored and preserved.

Please join us in our effort to keep Exodus Drive as a lasting emblem of Plantersville's history and sign this petition to make your voice heard. Your support is integral to keeping the spirit of our community alive.

I received notice that you received information stating that Exodus Drive is undergoing a name change & you are assisting w/a petition to prevent same. I do not know where you received that information, but please note that information is not accurate. There was never an ordinance from the County or legislation from the State to have that name change. The Community organization at its meeting, after notice to the community, requested that Exodus Drive be designated as a memorial highway in memory of Johnny Morant. There was never a desire, intent or legislation to change the name of Exodus Drive & there still isn’t. We don’t know how this matter was confused, but even at that, just inquiring a little prior to making allegations would’ve easily cleared that up. Information had previously been circulated throughout the community to inform it of this & to avoid any confusion. We are a united community & would not promote any changes w/o the community’s knowledge & consent. We listen to all concerns & respond to them; we do not do things secretly. If you desire to discuss this further, I can be reached at 843-527-2448. I suggest confirmation of information prior to distribution of false information, confirm & verify. Louis R.
