Allow excused absences for student political walkouts

The Issue

In recent years, students across California have increasingly become engaged in civic and political issues that resonate deeply with them. Participation in political walkouts, protests, and other civil actions has been a powerful way for students, especially those in secondary education, to express their views and contribute to important discussions shaping our society. However, these acts of civic engagement often come with a cost to their academic records, specifically in the form of unexcused absences which can negatively affect a student's attendance record and academic standing.

The current policies as per the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Student Handbook and California Education Code (EC) Section 48205 (14) do provide guidance on what constitutes an excused absence. This includes allowances for students participating in civic or political events. Unfortunately, there is inconsistency in how these absences are recorded and acknowledged across different schools and districts.

To address this, we urge James A Garfield High School and educational authorities across California to revise and clarify guidelines to ensure that all students who engage in political or civic events as part of their educational and personal development are marked with excused absences. By doing so, we not only support our students' right to free expression but also provide them with the security to participate in the democratic process without fearing academic penalties.

Sign this petition to urge the Garfield High School, LAUSD, and Californian policymakers to safeguard students' rights to participate in political activities without academic repercussion. Together, we can pave the way for a more civically engaged and empowered youth ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. Please support and sign this petition today.
