The Issue

As a student of Collierville High School, religion plays a significant role in my life. It saddens me to see that many of us are unable to fully practice our faith due to the school's current policy on absences. This is particularly true for students like myself who observe Friday prayers as part of our religious commitment.

In the United States, where freedom of religion is a fundamental right protected by the First Amendment, it is crucial that educational institutions accommodate and respect all religious practices. The U.S Department of Education has guidelines recommending schools to respect students' religious beliefs by allowing excused absences for religious observances (source: U.S Department of Education).

However, at present, Collierville High School does not excuse absences for Friday prayers. This means that students who wish to observe their faith must choose between their education and their religion - a choice no one should have to make.

We propose an amendment in the school's policy allowing excused absences specifically for Friday prayers. This change would not only uphold our constitutional rights but also promote an inclusive environment respecting diversity and individual beliefs.

We call upon the administration of Collierville High School and relevant stakeholders to consider this proposal seriously. Please sign this petition if you believe in supporting religious freedom within our educational system.
