The Issue

In honor of our beloved son's memory, I am sharing a deeply personal story that highlights the profound impact of bereavement on our family and why it's imperative to advocate for the exceptions in graduation ceremonies. Our daughter, a dedicated and resilient student, lost her brother in a heartbreaking event during her senior year. This tragedy has forced her to receive home instruction as she navigates through this difficult period.

Despite this tremendous loss, my daughter has persevered academically, not only meeting but exceeding all graduation requirements. Her unwavering determination and commitment have led to acceptances from several colleges, marking a bright future ahead. Nevertheless, what truly matters to her is the opportunity to walk across the commencement stage with her peers—an achievement that symbolizes her strength, dedication, and the culmination of twelve years of hard work.

While the standard protocol dictates that only students attending school in traditional settings are eligible to participate in the commencement ceremony, I firmly believe that exceptions should be made under extraordinary circumstances like ours. Such policies must take into account the unique challenges faced by students during times of personal hardship. Granting my daughter the chance to partake in the graduation ceremony would not only honor her journey but also serve as an acknowledgment of her courage and resilience amid life's unpredictable turns.

I urge the school board and administration to consider compassionate exceptions to allow students who receive home instruction under extenuating circumstances to participate fully in their graduation ceremonies. This change is not just for my daughter but for all students who find themselves in similar situations, ensuring that they receive the rightful reward and recognition of their educational efforts.

We seek your support to stand with us in this petition to bring about this change. By signing this, you lend your voice to the cause of fairness and acknowledgment of every student's journey, promising them the chance to feel connected and celebrated alongside their peers.
